Agriculture minister says milk should be processed in Moldova

23 October 2009

Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Valeriu Cosarciuc considers the ban on the export of dry milk from Moldova imposed by the Russian authorities will not have a serious economic impact on the country's agricultural sector.

The minister told the reporters that Moldova exports only about 100 tonnes of dry milk. “We must make sure that the milk is processed in our country. We must have our own processing companies,” Valeriu Cosarciuc said, stressing the necessity of diversifying the assortment of dairy products. According to the information provided by the minister, about 400 types of cheeses, creams and milk deserts are produced in the countries with advanced agriculture. Moldova makes only 10 types of cheeses.

“If we produce more kinds of dairy products, we will satisfy the demand and will be able to increase exports of finished products, not raw material,” Valeriu Cosarciuc said.
