Relaxing rules on meat sale 'may ruin domestic producers'

12 October 2009

Meat producers are afraid that relaxing the regulations for the sale of meat and meat products may generate a recession for the domestic producers, because they will not be able to handle the competition from foreign producers, according to the online publication Business Expert.

The reaction came after Economy Ministry officials suggested one of the solutions to liberalize the market would be to lift restrictions on meat imports.

The meat producers say that since the government introduced requirements for meat imports in 2006, the domestic output increased by 40 percent to 100,000 tonnes a year. At the same time, poultry farms increased their annual output to 32,000 tonnes, covering 60 percent of the domestic demand for poultry.
