The volume of passenger and freight traffic in the eight months to August dropped about twofold compared with the corresponding period last year.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the railway, road, fluvial and air carriers over January-August this year transported 4.698,1 million tonnes of goods or 39.4% of the last year's eight-month volume.
The distance covered by the goods in the period was 1.599,9 billion tonnes per kilometer or 47.0% of the figure for January-August 2008. The volume of railway freight fell by 67.1%, of road freight – by 48.0%, of air freight – by 2.5%. The distance covered by railway freight decreased by 70.8%, road freight – by 22.4%, air freight – by 13.0%, fluvial freight – by 14.2%.
Exports of goods declined by 52% compared with January-August last year. The number of passengers transported by buses and minibuses fell by 7.2%, while of those conveyed by fluvial units of transport and planes rose by 4.1% and 0.2% respectively.
