No company in Moldova is yet prepared to develop a business with yearly sales of a billion dollars.
Moldovagaz is close to such an objective, but the considerable rise in its sales during the last few years is mainly due to larger prices. Such a conclusion is contained in the rating and analysis journal Standard Financiar. Thurday's number of the journal includes the list of the top 50 Moldovan economic players.
According to the journal, the study is a kind of miniaturized radiography of the Moldovan economy for 2008, which was a good year for the economy. The GDP rose by 7.6%, while the foreign investments reached a record high. However, last year Moldova entered a crisis, but this fact was denied initially by the authorities.
The list contains no Moldovan company with a turnover of over US$100 million. Among such companies can be the Sheriff group owned by Tira spol businessmen, whose major properties like Interdnestrkom, Kvint or the Tiraspol Bakery are included in the list separately. Companies operating in the energy sector take nine positions of the first 20, telecommunication companies five of 20, iron smelting companies - two of 20, companies manufacturing building materials two of 20 and companies working in the food industry and the soft drinks sector by one of 20.
Among wine businesses, only the Tiraspol company Kvint and Cricova entered the list, ranking 28th and 50th respectively. The energy companies dominate the list because their sales rose fueled by the larger prices of the energy resources, which doubled or even trebled during the last 5-6 years. The telecommunication companies developed owing to a larger number of clients and demand. The Moldovan industry is poorly developed and this is confirmed by the low number of companies producing consumer goods in the list.
